The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team lost to Georgetown Gateway 2-1 Feb. 20 in District 25-4A play.
The Lady Mustangs (8-7, 5-2 District 24-4A ) still control their own destiny for the Class 4A playoffs. They are currently tied with the Lady Gators for second in the standings.
“We currently still hold the tie breaker,” head coach Abigail Blunt said.
That’s because Marble Falls beat Gateway 3-0 in the first round in a match at Mustang Stadium Jan. 26. They scored more goals against the Lady Gators than they have allowed, which gives them the tiebreaker advantage.
The Lady Mustangs led 1-0 at the half thanks to a goal by Presley Kahl on an assist from Haley France.
But the Lady Gators regrouped in the second half, finding the back of the net twice for the victory.
Blunt noted her players were on the attack often throughout the final 40 minutes of play.
“We played below average and couldn’t put the ball away,” she said. “We did have opportunities on goal.”
Marble Falls was set to host Luling Feb. 23 in a non-district contest, but the opponent cancelled the match. The coach said the program viewed the cancelation as an opportunity to self-examine and get a much-needed night off.
“Our goal this week was to get healthy, reset and get ready for our next game,” Blunt said.
That’s against Austin Achieve Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Mustang Stadium. The junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity following at 7 p.m.
“Now we focus on the next goal and do whatever it takes to continue our run for playoffs,” the coach said.
